Aviation Management ( 2 years, plus an optional Foundation Year, Diploma )

The Diploma Aviation management is a well-designed academic program that helps to introduce students to the core areas of business administration that runs the aviation industry. The study program is designed with the aim of ensuring trainees graduate into senior positions in various airline and aviation organizations. This programme is  geared towards providing students with a chance to learn regulations, mechanisms and the characteristics of general management and the aviation businesses to be particular. This is also an ideal programme for students who are seeking to develop a career in both business management and have a strong understanding of the aviation industry.

1st Semester

AVI 101 – Introduction to Management ( in  an Aviation Context )

This module aims to provide a broad introduction to theories of management, and to appraise their relevance to contemporary management practice especially within the aviation industry.

ACC 103 – Accounting 1

This module is an introduction to accounting. Its main aim is to provide students with the basic techniques and skills required in order to prepare a set of financial statements comprising an income statement, a balance sheet and a cash flow statement. The module includes accounting principles and concepts, double-entry bookkeeping and an introduction to the accounting regulatory framework.

ECO 104 – Microeconomics

Economics offers powerful insights into the world in which we live. This introductory economics course aims:

  • To provide an essential, simple, useable body of economic theory, which will both provide the basis for further study and equip students with a real understanding of the role of economics in business, public and private decision making.
  • To apply the theory to analysis of the real world
  • To convince students, using a blend of theory, applications and policy analysis, that economics is both interesting and relevant.

AVI 102 – Airline Management & Operations

The module introduces fundamentals of Arline Operations, current issues and its applications in the industry.

A high percentage of an airline’s cost structure consists of maintenance, ground handling, in-flight services, call- centres and aircraft acquisitions.

This module looks into teaching students the extent of the issues that arise in airline management and how airlines are able to solve the problems within the regulatory and economic constraints of the industry.

COM 105 -Business Communication

The main objectives of the course are to:

  • make students aware of the various forms of communication within a business-oriented context;
  • provide students with the know-how to develop effective message and fundamental business terminology to communicate professionally and successfully at the workplace;
  • thoroughly discuss barriers in communicative situations and provide solutions for improvement;
  • cover in detail all types of business messages including oral messages such as interviews and presentations;
  • improve students’ competence basically in writing as well as in other forms of business communication, such as public speaking.

 2nd Semester

MGT 202 – Organisations & Behaviour

This course provides an introduction to the nature of organisations in relation to management practices. The unit examines the internal nature of organisations from both a theoretical and practical viewpoint. The unit is intended to develop an understanding of the behaviour of people within organisations and the significance of organisational design and characteristics. It also aims to provide the basis for, and to underpin further study in, specialist areas of business.

ACC – 203 – Accounting II

This module builds on Accounting 1 to cover advanced aspects of financial accounting. It also covers introductory aspects of management accounting suitable for use at all levels up to and including professional foundation level courses and first-year degree courses

MTH 204 – Statistics

This module enables the student to appreciate the significance of applications in statistics and to  present basic statistical concepts and their use in descriptive and inferential statistics

AVI 205 – Airport Operations

This module provides an overview of airport management and t how airports function for the operation of the aviation system. Airports play a vital role in processing passengers and air cargo to ensure that the aviation system functions safely. Airports are also complex businesses including infrastructure (terminals and runways), retailing environments and the operational environment for airlines.

AVI 206 – Aviation and the Environment

An  understanding of the environmental impacts from aviation is an essential basis for informed policy discussions, and for the development of effective mitigation measures . This course provides students with an understanding on the noise, air quality and climate change impacts from the aviation sector.

 3rd Semester

AVI 305 – Human Factors in Aviation

This course will provide students with a detailed understanding of the influences of human factors in aviation and error causation and accident prevention. Students will be exposed to the specific human factor areas of error, physiology, and psychology which will enable the student to analyze and provide corrective/preventative inputs to organizational and operational environments in aviation. 

TOU 110 – Air Travel Fares & Ticketing

This course aims to develop the students’ general knowledge of the air travel fares and ticketing transportation industry, to include the regulators and associations. Students will also learn the fundamentals for pricing journeys, how to interpret constructed fares, and how to decode electronic ticket data so the students can provide future customers with the best service possible

MKT 303 – Marketing

This course aims to provide learners with an introduction to the fundamental concepts and principles that underpin the marketing process. In addition, it examines the role and practice of marketing within the changing business environment. This broad-based unit will provide all learners with a concise and contemporary overview of marketing, and equip them with the knowledge and skills to underpin further study in the specialist field of marketing.

Provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of the key areas of advertising and promotion as part of an integrated approach to marketing communications. Learners will develop the ability to determine specific promotional activities in response to target audience and other stakeholders’ characteristics, and to apply and justify appropriate promotional mixes within a strategic and tactical framework.

FIN 304 – Financial Reporting

The aim of the module is to introduce students to the theory and practice of financial accounting. This area of accounting deals with the reporting of information to external users of financial statements. From the perspective of theory, emphasis is placed on establishing who these users are and what their needs are. It cannot be assumed that these will be met without the intervention of the government or professional accounting bodies and some of the module is devoted to issues in regulation of external financial reporting. The module includes a discussion not only of the actual content of regulations but also what that

content ought to be or might be. Attention is also paid to who sets accounting rules and by what processes.

From a practical perspective, the aim of the module is to show students how to make the judgments, assess recognition and measurement of financial elements that are required by theory or by regulation and also how to communicate, by way of written reports, the results and implications of these calculations.

The module develops and expands the work done in the Accounting 1 and Accounting 2 modules which are prerequisites. Students must be capable in double entry accounting, be able to prepare a set of company accounts and have an understanding of the use of ratios.

HRM 305 – Human Resource Management

This Course provides an introduction to the concepts and practices of human resources management. The aim of the unit is to provide an understanding of the human resources management role and function within the key areas of resourcing, reward, development and relations.

 4th Semester

HRM 402 – Managing Customer Service in an Aviation Environment

Frontline airline customer service professionals, such as ticket reservation staff, check-in and gate agents, and cabin crew, work in one of the most dynamic industries.This course, examines how the Internet, social media and new technologies are changing airline customer service and the need for effective customer service models to be adopted for success in the aviation industry. The course also examines several examples of how airlines are keeping up with changes to meet customer needs and stay competitive.

AVI 401 – Aviation Law

The global Aviation industry is heavily controlled by a series of local, national, regional and international regulations and laws. This course aims to equip students with an understanding of Aviation regulation and law.

MGT 402 – Principles of Leadership

The main objectives of the course are to:

  • Present main theories of leadership.
  • Analyze factors that influence effective leadership.
  • Discuss differences in leadership styles.
  • Analyze the impact of culture on leadership.
  • Outline features of contemporary leadership.
  • Explain and discuss ethical leadership.
  • Present and analyze practical examples of leadership.

BUS 403 – Strategy & Business Policy in Aviation

The main objectives of the course are to:

  • Equip students with skills needed to analyze the business environment and, by considering organizations’ internal characteristics, plan strategically for organizational success in the context of the aviation industry at national and international levels in order for firms in the aviation sector to gain and sustain competitive advantage
  • Expose students to information and analytical techniques relating to the general management ‘big picture’, thereby providing a cross-functional and strategic perspective.

 AVI 404 – Aviation Safety

This course will examine various aspects of aviation flight and ground safety management. Aviation safety program development, aviation accident causation models, Safety Management Systems (SMS) and other areas relevant to aviation safety will be discussed.
